DOBERGE CAKE

Take a bite of eight layers of birthday-worthy goodness only in New Orleans

A doberge cake turns any day into a special occasion.  Doberge - say DOH-bosh - is a favorite confection in New Orleans, an ethereal treat first created by baker Beulah Ledner in the 1930s as a lighter version of Hungarian dobos torta, with pudding replacing butter cream filling. She Frenchified the name to doberge, and a classic was born.

Besides Gambino’s, the Metairie bakery that acquired the name and recipe in 1946, Debbie Does Doberge in the Warehouse District bakes an eight layer feather light torte in flavors like salted caramel, red velvet and peanutbutterscotch. Her storefront Bakery Bar on Annunciation, not far from the river, is a cozy bar with nibbles, in case you want to pair your slice with a drink. By the way, Debbie is actually Charlotte McGehee and Charles Mary IV, but they figured Debbie Does Doberge is harder to forget.
For when you’re craving, you can also order slices of DDD at Katie's Restaurant, 12 Mile Limit and Toup's Meatery, all in Mid-City.
